A soil profile is shown in Figure 1. If a uniformly distributed load Δσ is applied at the ground surface, what will be the settlement of the clay layer due to primary consolidation? Assume the sand above the ground water table to be dry. Given: Δσ = 1000 lb/ft2, H1 = 23 ft, H2 = 17 ft, and H3 = 8 ft.
sand: γdry = 110 lb/ft3 γsat = 115 lb/ft3
clay: γsat = 120 lb/ft3 LL = 50, e = 0.9
