Here is an example using Jeannette: In The Glass Castle, Jeannette often exhibits courage. For example, after burning herself, Jeannette did not become afraid of fire. Instead, she writes, “Whenever neighbors burned trash, I ran over and watched the blaze trying to escape the garbage can” (9). Jeannette should have been terrified of fire after she caught fire while cooking. However, her actions show that she actually grows more fascinated with fire after the incident. In fact, the neighbor even questions why Jeannette doesn’t “run in the opposite direction from any fire she saw.” Although the normal reaction would be to run away from fire, Jeannette’s desire to see it up close demonstrates courage on her part.
