MBA 7522
You have recently been hired as the Human Resources Director for a manufacturing facility with 250 people. There are 5 manufacturing departments, and each Department has a Manager. Each department has about the same number of people. You have discovered that there is no formal performance management plan in the company. You are concerned about this because you have also noticed the following things:
• Morale is at an all - time low.
• Employees who are very eager to excel feel frustrated as they see no path forward to grow with the company and are leaving.
• Performance issues are causing delays in some of the manufacturing lines, and the company's profits are being negatively impacted.
• 3 out of 5 managers are new to their positions and have not been leaders before.
• Managers are approving raises at various times in the year. There is a feeling among staff members that they are only approving raises for their friends. There is also little communication with the Finance Department when approving raises.
In your recent MBA Performance Management class, you have learned that a Performance Management Program for this company may help all the issues above.
Using your own research methods, and your text book, complete the following questions/tasks to prepare for your meeting with the Chief Operating Executive (CEO) of the company.
1) Please draft an email to your CEO. The purpose of this e-mail is to share your observations with the CEO, define a performance management program/system, and state in general terms why you think it is important for the success of the company.
2) Good work! Your e-mail was so good that your CEO has booked a meeting with you. To start the meeting, she would like to know exactly how a performance management system will help retain her high performing employees. Please state what elements of a performance management system would help increase retention, reduce turnover and why.
3) She knows a performance appraisal tool is an important piece of a strong performance management system. What appraisal tool do you recommend for the 250 employees?
4) Will you use the same appraisal tool for the Managers? If so, why? If not, why not?
5) What is your recommendation to the CEO to keep the performance management system active between yearly appraisals? Is there training required? If so, for whom?
