1.
Pipes must slope slightly downhill to drain properly. The standard slope is anywhere from %
inch to 3 inches per foot.
According to the International Plumbing Code, drainage pipes should be run with a uniform
slope at the following minimum pitches:
PIPE DIAMETER
MINIMUM SLOPE
1/4" per foot
1/9" per foot
1/17" per foot

3" to 6"
8" or larger
If you calculate the gradient of each slope, state whether your gradient is going to be
positive or negative.
NA
b. Calculate the gradient for each type of pipe using the fact that 1 foot = 12 inches. Round to
3 sf.
Determine the percentage that would be written if these pipes were running as gutter on a
road.
d.
If a 2% in pipe has been installed with a gradient of -0.019, explain whether it should be
reinstalled.
If a pipe has been correctly installed with a gradient of -0.006, find the pipe diameter.
