Soviets motivated their will to control Eastern Europe with wanting to have a "Buffer Zone" - it would provide a defense from an attach from the East. (motivated by the last attach of Nazi Germany on Russia)

Also, the USSR wanted to strengthen its position internationally and spread communism.

After World War II, USSR wanted to control countries in Eastern Europe because they needed to protect its borders from Future attacks.

In year 1944 and 1945, The Red Army marched all the way from Eastern Europe in its fight against Nazis. By the time this war got over,, Stalin was sure that USSR had the capability to control Eastern Europe and if this happens then the countries like Germany will never be able to use countries such as Hungary and Poland as these countries could be used as a post to stage an Invade. He knew that every European state was having a communist government which was loyal to USSR.  

The economy of every country was linked to USSR. By the end of World War 2 and cold war, the tensions increased between West European countries and East Europe countries which supported communist Ideology. Stalin wanted to buffer the zone of East European countries and he wanted to protect USSR from possible and further attack in future.  

There were majority of eastern European countries that supported and were influenced by USSR. The countries that were under the influence of USSR were Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Ukraine. But by the time Stalin died, the battle for power struggle started in USSR.  

When world war-2 got over, there were still tensions going between many countries and USSR was also involved in those tensions. Stalin wanted to full control of Eastern Europe because he wanted to make sure that his territory was saving from future attacks.
