strike slip fault
A strike slip fault is when two tectonic plates are pressed together and slide past each other, often causing earthquakes. The two plates, the Pacific and north American, meet at the San Andreas fault. The shear stress - stress force parallel to the plane of motion of the material - of this plate movement caused the fault line and continues to exacerbate it.
