The Wilderness Campaign involved the major battles of Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor.
The Wilderness Campaign was a series of battles fought in Virginia during May and June of 1864 in the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant, commanding general of all the armies of the Union, personally led the actions of the Army of the Potomac, commanded by General George G. Meade and other forces against the Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army from Northern Virginia. Although Grant suffered heavy losses during the campaign and failed to defeat Lee and take Richmond, it was still a strategic Union victory, since he was able through a war of attrition to settle east of Richmond and Petersburg without Lee being able to do something about. That laid the groundwork for him to beat Lee and take Richmond a year later, which shortly afterwards led to the capitulation of the Confederacy.
