After the Tet offensive everyone started understanding how unwinnable the war was, in the words of Walter Cronkite, and they started opposing it seeing the war as anything but noble. The southern strategy was a plan from the 70s in which the Republican party developed an electoral plan to get the support of white southerners by appealing to racism against African-American people. They did gain a huge amount of white voters and a domination of the region which had traditionally been supportive of the democratic party.

This was devastating for the economy and the society.

The major developments which offset negatively the technological triumphs during 1970s are as follows:
- Vietnam lost the war because of its allies left the Vietnamese troops on their own saying that this war is unwinnable.
- The Watergate scandal was exposed and Nixon was exposed trying to spy on other political parties with a view to gather information which would help him win the next elections.
- The American people were captured as hostages by Iranians in the presidency of Carter. This continued till the next leader was elected as a president.
- The Republican party framed a plan to win election by gaining votes of white people by asking them to discriminate African-Americans on the basis of color and they received majority of votes.
- The failure of south eastern Asia policies resulted in the communist regime after Vietnam lost the war to communists and the Cambodian genocide .
- OPEC, the organization which is responsible for managing the exports of oil put an embargo on all those countries which supported Israel in the war between Arabs and Israel which led to a shortage of oil in many areas.
- The supreme court stated that the abortion is illegal and anyone supporting women in doing so will be punished. This changed the culture and beliefs of people.
Therefore it can be said that 1970s was an era of major political failures and developments which negatively offset the technological triumphs during the era.
