Edmond, a Confederate solider, was given a "lucky" locket by his sweetheart. He's talking with friends over a fire. On successive day a fight breaks out, killing several, and a priest retrieves the case from a dead boy's body to come back it to the lover. She is brokenhearted at the news of Edmond's death however he later returns home and divulges that the case had been taken from him before the battle.
The most ironic statement about the locket is:
A. It was meant to be a symbol of Octavie's love for Edmond, but it came to represent his death.
