AB is tangent to circle O at B.
If AB=7, and AO = 17.4 what is the length of the radius (r)?\

If AB is tangent in B to circle with center at point O, then ∠[tex]ABO =90^{0}[/tex] and the triangle ABO is right.
By the Pythagorean theorem [tex]AO^{2}=AB^{2}+BO^{2}[/tex], where BO=r, so, [tex]r= \sqrt{AO^{2}-AB^{2}} = \sqrt{17.4^{2}-7^{2}} = \sqrt{302.76-49} = \sqrt{253.76} =15.9[/tex].

As, AB is tangent to OB so m∠ABO= 90° So, ABO is a right triangle and we use the Pythagoras theorem which is OA² = AB² + BO²
By putting values;
                                                            (17.4)² = (7)² + BO²
                                                                  BO² =  253.76
                                                                   BO = √253.76
                                                                   BO=  15.93 units which is the length of radius.
