Meiosis has two rounds of genetic separation and cellular division while mitosis only has one of each. In meiosis homologous chromosomes separate leading to daughter cells that are not genetically identical. In mitosis the daughter cells are identical to the parent as well as to each other.

Cell division is the process of replicating and division of genetic material that takes place in somatic and reproductive cells. The cell division can be mitotic and meiotic.
The difference between mitosis and meiosis are:
1. Mitosis is a type of cell division that takes place in the somatic cells. The mitotic division results in a similar number of chromosomes in the daughter cells and the parent cells.
2. Meiosis is a type of reduction division, in which the chromosome number in the parent cell is halved and produces four haploid daughter cells. It takes place in the reproductive cells.
Thus, mitosis gives rise to the diploid daughter cells, whereas meiosis gives rise to the haploid daughter cells.
