The convection currents in the mantle move the tectonic plates continuously. The direction of movement of the tectonic plates depend on the direction of the movement of the convection currents.  Every year the tectonic plates move in opposite  direction by 2-3 cm.  The convection current are just like conveyor belt below the molten rock in the mantle.
