Mr. Underwood's editorial defending Tom Robinson was surprising because he is known for not liking African-American people. In Chapter 16, Atticus says, "'You know, it’s a funny thing about Braxton,' said Atticus. 'He despises Negroes, won’t have one near him.'" Although supposedly Mr. Underwood had these beliefs, it appears that he changed in the story, since he wrote an editorial about injustice.

Mr. Underwood is a character in "To Kill a Mockingbird". A tale that describes the life of Jem, an African American girl, and his family. Underwood was an editor for the Maycomb newspaper. Throughout the story, the reader can sense he has a prejudice against African American People. However, he surprisingly writes an editorial in which he spoke against the killing of Tom Robinson, an African American man who was trialed and executed for allegedly harming Mayella Ewell, who was of white descent.
