All states require RNs to earn at least an associate degree, but some employers prefer candidates with bachelor's degrees. RNs must also be licensed to practice, a process that requires that they complete an accredited nursing program and pass the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX-RN.

It depends on each program and it’s school. Every school requires pre-requisites that have been completed within the past 5 or 10 years [depending on the school]. Some schools also require that the student take an entrance exam, the TEAS or HESI, or they might not require any entrance exams. Another important thing they look at is your GPA.

Common pre-requisites include:
Anatomy and Physiology I and II
Medical Terminology
Biology I and II
Nutrition
Medical Ethics
Psychology
Sociology
Psychology: growth and development
