Let L represent the number of games lost. Then 2L+17 is the number of games won. The total of games played is ...

... 98 = L + (2L+17)

... 81 = 3L . . . . . . . . subtract 17

... 27 = L . . . . . . . . divide by the coefficient of L

... 2L+17 = 2·27+17 = 71

The team had 71 wins and 27 losses.
