Because he was the very first president of the usa
It goes a bit more in depth than simply that George Washington was the First President of the United States (Under the Constitution).  Washington was the Commander of the revolutionary army and he was almost seen as divine at this time period.  Although he definitely had his faults his opinion on matters were able to influence congress to vote a certain way even causing some people to vote against their wishes.  Washington was the first president under the constitution which helped solidify this title as father of our country but his importance in this time goes beyond his presidency.  Without him as our first president, meaning if it was someone who was corrupt and cared about maintaining power or keeping office away from those who held different political views, it is likely that the United States would not have survived very long and would most likely not be the nation that it is today.
