John Jacob Astor is remembered as one of the wealthiest businessmen of his time. He was born in Waldorf, Germany in 1763 and traveled to America to look for opportunities and entered the fur trade business. Jacob Astor founded the American Fur Company and a subsidiary the Pacific Fur Company, while the China market (Asia) was expanding as the greatest market for furs, Astor knew they would pay a lot for his products so he bought a territory at the mouth of the Columbia River and founded his own trading station, Astoria.
