The Noel Hypothesis elaborated by Donald Noel in 1968, states that there are 3 components regarding stratification:
- Ethnocentrism
- Competition
- Differential in Power
Ethnocentrism is the most significant when it comes to stratification, as it is a biased way of thought in which an individual judges another person, group, or society according to his or her cultural standard.
Ethnocentrism is the core of the problem when it comes to inequality because it is the essential belief that fuels the group with more power to engage in segregational actions.
It is this Ethnocentrism what leads groups with the most power to increase the gap between other groups, as it is a way for them to maintain their privileged status.
The three components of Donald Noel's (1968) "Noel Hypothesis are
- Ethnocentrism,
- Competition
- The differential in power ethnic or racial.
The Noel hypothesis is one that states that when groups that are said to be 2 or more than 2 in number be in contact situation as a result of different reasons, there is a kind of interaction between the three factors between the groups and this will lead to ethnic stratification.
