Curtis Welch was the only doctor in Nome, but fortunately he was a good one. Dr. Welch had seen no signs of the "Black Death" for many years. Now he recognized its telltale white spots in the children's throat and knew it was back. Diphtheria spread quickly. More than fifteen hundred people, many of them children, were at risk.
