Dear Darla,

I enjoyed reading The Giver. It was a powerful book that is in the young adult section of our library. It is so cool because it does not really tell you the ending; you have to make a determination of what happens next. That is exciting to be able to add my own thoughts to what I think a good ending might be. You will read how Jonas made a sacrificial choice for the good of the community. But really, this is a scary thought. What if our government only did what was right for the majority of the people?

I also enjoyed the book because my Grandpa is really old and he is not remembering things like he used to. Same thing happened in The Giver. Life is not often complete without both good and bad things happening to us. It is sad because the word "love" is banished from their language to each other. Emotions are not something that people should show in this story. I know you know a lot about utopian and dystopian societies, and this book was about both. A perfect world. No fear, pain, hunger, illness, conflict, or hatred. Can you imagine a world without hate? The twist is going to be when you find out that Jonas seems to be really living in a dystopian society due to all that is being done and said. The world in the beginning of the book seems like utopian. Really Darla, you should read it. It made me cry! No world is ever really perfect.

See you soon!
