After Joseph Stalin ordered the blockade of Berlin, people were totally disconnected and could not have any type of contact with the outer world. That is why on June 26, 1948, Great Britain and the United States started to send help and supplies to Berlin using airplanes. President Harry S. Truman wanted to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia or the possibility of another war in the region, that is why he opted for help by air. In May 1949, the USSR lifted the blockade.
