The reason for doping violation and drug test requirement is fairness. If an athlete is using any drug that will enhance his or her performance in the sport event, then it will be unfair to the competition as other athletes do not have such enhancement. Many performance-enhancing drugs have serious side effects, e.g. steroids are bad for health. So the ban is also there to protect young athletes.

Sometime the ban can be so strict that athletes may violate it without knowing. For example, a common cold and flu medicine, Sudafed, contains Pseudoephedrine; which is considered a stimulant. It is banned as it can can make athletes more alert for a competition. If an athlete takes Sudafed for a cold on the day of competition, he will violate the drug ban.
