Answer:

1. The carpenter has 2.58 feet of wood for the shelf.

2. Mr. Condron walked 11.1 miles in three days.

Step-by-step explanation:

Requirement 1

Given,

the carpenter has 21/2 feet long wood plank. He cuts off 17/4 feet of the total wood plank to replace a deck board and 11/3 feet to repair a step.

So total wood used (17/4 + 11/3) = (51 + 44)/12 = 95/12 feet or 7.91 feet wood plank.

Now, the carpenter has (21/2 - 95/12) = (126 - 95)/12 = 31/12 feet or 2.58 feet wood plank for the shelf.

(Note: I have taken the mixed fraction to improper fraction.)

Requirement 2

Given,

Mr. Condron walked 25/6 miles on Tuesday. He walked 19/10 miles less on Wednesday. So he walked (25/6  - 19/10) = 34/15 miles on Wednesday. Again, he walked 12/5 miles more than Wednesday. So, he walked ( 34/15 +  12/5) = (34+36)/15 = 70/15 = 14/3 miles on Thursday.

So, total he walked = (25/6) + (34/15) + (14/3) = (125+68+140)/30 = 333/30 = 111/10 or 11.1 miles.
