The magnitude of earthquake in Alaska is greater than the magnitude of earthquake in Haiti, still the destruction and number of deaths in Haiti was more because of the following reason;
The quality of the buildings constructed in Haiti was poor which led to the collapse of the building even due to the lower magnitude of the earthquake.
Also, the population density near the epicenter of the Alaska's earthquake was very low.
