Answer:

“The Black Cat”, is a very macabre story with the gruesome killing of the cat, the new cat with the shape of the gallows on it, the cat hanging in the house on fire, and the death of the narrator's wife. There are also many omens within the story such as, the cat named Pluto after the god of the underworld. This story also contain supernatural and sinister characteristics with the strange phenomena with the cats and fire, and the ill fortune from the fire and the conviction of killing his wife. Finally, the narrator could be considered a villain due to his intemperance killings.

In “Berenice”, Poe uses farrago within the situation where Egaeus took Berenice's teeth before they found out that she is actually alive. This situation is made out to be quite horrific with the imagery of Berenice missing her teeth. The story is also very gothic because of the time frame: Egaeus is marrying his cousin and they live in a castle with servants. When Berenice appeared to be dead, the story was melancholy because the characters were mourning their loss.
