What is the traditional goal or central idea that is the foundation of a Liberal Arts Education?

a. The "traditional" goal of Liberal Arts education was to provide for some basis of further education beyond High School so there weren't a high number of young people with nothing to do

b. To become a well-educated person who is then in a better position to work in any number of careers
