Answer:

Why is Jesus called the lamb of God?

John 1:29, KJV: "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

In the old testament people used to lambs at the day of atonement or Yom Kippur.

In Leviticus the third book of Torah it states many type of sacrifices such  as

  • Burnt offering
  • Sin offering
  • Grain offering
  • Reparation offering
  • Fellowship offering

When we take a look at 'Sin offering' it is a sacrifice to cleanse from sin.

Which reminds us of Isaiah 53.

Genesis 3:21

21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Here in this verse we can see that God made them a garment made out of Skin (an animal) to cover their nakedness.

This verse is a shadow of the things yet to come, which is Jesus dying for our sins, paying our price, taking away our sins.

Jesus is the lamb of God, because he is holy, many of us commit sins in our life times but Jesus didn't. Luke 1:35 because of the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, The original sin didn't occur in him.

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Lambs are considered as symbol of purity as they are used for cleansing sin in the old testament. Whereas Jesus is the lamb of God, Son of God offered himself as the sacrifice for the whole world.

20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus is the lamb of God, son of God, and the great high priest in of the new testament.

The new testament starts from the day that Jesus shed his Holy blood for us.
