How is the Lakota rite of passage and the Apache rite of passage similar and different?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of text versus video for presenting the material?

Respuesta :

Answer and Explanation:

1. Both rites of passage depend on individuals reaching a certain age to participate. This age represents the transition from childhood to adulthood and the responsibility that this implies in the lives of individuals. ] despite having this similarity, there are differences between the two rites of passage. The difference is in how this passing rite happens. In the video "Apaches Girls Rite" the girls need to go through three phases of challenges that test whether they deserve to receive the female hood and be considered an adult by their people. In "medicine bag", however, there is no challenge and the scholarship is passed on to all the boys, firstborn of the family.

2. The advantage of the text in relation to the video, is that the text is able to show, through the narration in first person, what the boy is thinking and feeling while the rite of passage was happening. The disadvantage is that you cannot see what is happening properly and the first person narration gives you a limitation of details. In relation to the video, the advantage is that we have a panoramic view of the rite of passage and we have all possible details including what is happening. The downside is that we are not able to know what the girls are feeling about it all.

a) The difference between the two rites of passage in "The Medicine Bag," featuring Martin of the Lokota tribe and "Apache Girls' Rite of Passage," showing Dachina of the Apache tribe can be seen in the processes that accompany each rite of passage.

These processes or features of a rite of passage are detailed below:

1. Every rite of passage (both the Lakota's and the Apache's) involves separation of the adolescents from their families.  This separation enables them to embrace the unfamiliar.

2. Another feature of a rite of passage is the transition.  This is a time for learning and growth.  At the end of the learning activities, the adolescents are tested to prove their mantle.

3. Another important process of the rite of passage is the reunification or return of the now-declared adults to their communities.  This happens to mark the change of status when the former adolescents are incorporated or reintegrated into their societies.

b) These processes establish the similarities of the two rites of passage. Their difference lies in the orchestrated ceremonies that accompanied each rite of passage. Elaborate community ceremonies are organized for Dachina in "The Apache Girls" than for Martin in "The Medicine Bag."

c) Texts enjoy some advantages over videos in the presentation of events include:

  • greater understanding of the characters
  • rigorous studies and reviews
  • the authors can use different literary devices to depict the message
  • videos rely mainly on visual techniques
  • video presentations do not allow an in-depth understanding to take place.

Thus, rites of passage mark important stages in the life of individuals in a community, from birth to death.
