Considering that many immigrants needed a job almost immediately after arriving in the US, the wages they were willing to work for were generally much lower than what American citizens would work for. This caused tension between immigrants and native born citizens, as citizens of the US felt that their jobs were being stole by these immigrants. Along with this, individuals who wanted to keep their job would have to be willing to take pay cuts in order to stay employed.This reduction in pay negatively affected American families.
