If mankind had stopped adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere back in 1900, the level in the Northern Hemisphere’s (NH’s) summer would be just over 280 parts per million (ppm)
But we kept adding more CO2 after 1900.

If we had stopped in 1960, the level in the NH’s summer would be just over 320ppm.
But we kept adding more CO2 after 1960.
If we stopped in mid-2020, the level in the NH’s summer would be just over 420ppm
But we are going to keep adding more CO2 after this year.
There is some hope that some countries might stop adding more CO2 by as “early” as 2050.
At the current rates, we’ll be at least at 870ppm, even if the whole world stopped in 2050. (adding 10ppm per year from 2020 to 2040, and assuming a gradual slow-down to net-zero between 2040 and 2050)

Carbon dioxide concentrations are rising mostly because of the fossil fuels that people are burning for energy, imbalance between carbon sequestration (burial in sediments, capture by plants), and carbon emissions (decomposition and volcanic activity).
