Earthquake occurs when two tectonic plates collide, and one plate moves under and sinks into the mantle.

The earth's outer crust is composed of a series of tectonic plates which move on a hot flowing mantle.

If two tectonic plates meet, it will form a convergent plate boundary. Usually, the converging plate moves beneath the other plate through the process of subduction.

These subduction zones will cause earthquakes because the sinking plate will become fluid in magma. The new molten magma will rise up and erupt for violent volcanoes or earthquakes. Often they form arcs of islands over the convergent boundary.
