A small group of a privileged class were able to enjoy new values of familial love and innocence. However, the ones who were not apart of that social class or from Japan suffered. Children were forcibly taken from their families. Enslaved children were sold and indigenous children were sent away from their families. Race laws and colonial hierarchies would never allow mixed children to be apart of a family unit. They were also seen as vulnerable and used for harsh labor. Children in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, the middle east and India worked in plantations, factories and mines. They were also used as household servants.
