1. This metaphor is referring to our lives and how our dreams keep us flying, but dreams left alone cause us to crash (broken winged bird.)

2. Our dreams are the thing keeping us afloat and able to glide through life. Without dreams there is no hope, without hope, there is no life.

3. This is a more vivid image of our lives being meaningless and painful without our dreams.

4. This is again a more vivid image. Using a simile would indeed weaken Hughes poem because a metaphor is much more interesting and captiviating and makes you think of your own life.

5. This is an effective metaphor because of the pain behind the words and the depth of their meaning. "A broken winged bird" carries more weight then saying "our life without dreams is dead."
