Say you have 27 small cubes. You put them together and make a big cube. Meaning you have 3 layer of 9. Now you painted all the faces of the big cube. How many cubes are not painted.

0 faces are not painted, because 3 x 9 = 27.
If this isn't correct I don't understand.
