Chess
Chess is played with silent, invisible strategy. Waverly's mother uses this same strategy when dealing with her daughter. At the end of the story, Waverly is in her room contemplating her strategy and next move in the quiet battle with her mother. Throughout the story, the narrator talks about the "art of invisible strength". It's not just effective in chess, but also in conflicts within the family.
