n - 3n = 14 - 4n
Combine like terms on the left. (Like terms being things with the same variables brought to the same power... so x^2 and x wouldn't be a like term. While n and 3n are like terms)
- 2n = 14 - 4n
Add 4n on both sides to remove the -4n from the right and get all n terms on the left.
- 2n + 4n = 14 - 4n + 4n
- 2n + 4n = 14 + 0
- 2n + 4n = 14
Combine like terms on the left side!
2n = 14
Divide 2 on both sides to cancel out the 2 on the left. (Canceling out is simply making it equal 1. For example, 3/3 = 1. This can also work for variables, because the variables will both be the same. Example, n/n = 1. Because n can only equal 1 number at a time. So say if n = 3. 3/3 = 1)
2n/2 = 14/2
n = 7
