The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a famous building in Italy. The Tower is famous because it tilts to one side. The tower began to tilt during its construction in the 1200’s. In the following decades, the tilt only got worse. The builders of the tower came up with different ideas to explain this. In the end, they surmised that the ground the tower sat on was too soft. And they did things to try to correct this. For example, they built upper floors with one side taller than the other. (Because of this, the tower is actually curved.) Although tilted, the tower still exists today. In fact, it is a major tourist attraction. Modern builders have done things to make sure the tower continues to lean, but does not fall down. Their efforts have been successful. Between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. But the tower now leans at about 3.99 degrees. In 2008, construction workers performed more work on the tower. They removed 77 tons of ground to try to make the tower more level. They say the tower will now be stable for the next 200 years
