Colombian poet and writer, was born on November 27th, 1865 in Bogotá and died in the same city on May 23rd, 1896. Silva was not happy at school in the isolated, melancholy, and provincial Bogotá. His classmates envied his intelligence and mocked his manners and his appearance.

When he was a teenager he worked in the business that his father had. At nineteen, He traveled to Paris and a year later returned to his homeland. During his absence, there was a civil war and his father’s business was affected. On his death, a year later, Silva became the legal head of his family and had to face, with very little money. During this time, he published some poems because his vocation was poetry.

His sister Elvira died in 1891. It is said that he was inspired by her death and wrote ‘Nocturne’, his most famous poem. His work had a great influence on modernist poets.
