Napoleon was able to conquer much of Europe because of its proximity to France and because most of those places did not have any geographically threatening areas. The geography of Russia however led to his downfall because the climate did not allow for his success, he and his men almost froze to death before conquering Russia.

To extend his power, he tried to conquer as many states as possible. The geography served as an important support in the rise of the empire. He was able to capture many areas of the Europe as they were close to France and were safe to conquer.
Also, geography of some areas such as Russia made the empire fall. The weather resulted in death of many of his men. The freezing cold in Russia made him lose.
Also the islands of Britain were easy to block trade, but the invasion was difficult because of the same.
