W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington were two great pioneers of the black community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They disagreed sharply, however, on policies for black social and economic advancement. Many of today's debates about how to end class and racial inequality, what part black leadership can play, and what do the "haves" owe the "have-nots" in the black community reflect their competing ideologies.
