That statement is false.  Newton's discovery was exactly the other way around. 
He discovered that when white light passes through a prism, all of the visible
colors come out the other side, and you can tell one from another. 

He concluded that all of the colors are THERE in the white light, and they only
have to be spread out ... that's what the prism does.
