James Fenimore Cooper (pseudonym Jane Morgan 1789-1851) was American author and critic. He wrote The Last of the Mohicans (1826). He occupies the strange position of being among the 1st & last of America’s great novelists. Cooper helped create the uniquely American myth. Bumppo embodies the myth of the essential white America. Cooper first established many of the themes with which the major authors of the century would deal.
