The Homestead Act brought hope to millions of people because it gave them a chance to own a farm.
The Homestead Act became law in 1862 and:
- provided a farm for citizens of every gender as well as future citizens
- required that the person granted the land must stay on it and work to improve it
- required that the person pay a fee to register their ownership
The Act gave hope to many who thought they would be able to own land. While this worked for some, a lot of people missed out because of various problems such as land speculators finding loopholes and the land being hard to farm on.
In conclusion, the Homestead Act gave hope to millions of people of being able to become land owners but the reality was a little disappointing.
