Some of the cons of police chiefs being political appointees are the following:
- They can be subjected to the firing and hiring of the councils and mayors.
- They can be too loyal to mayors and councils rather than working in the interest of the people.
- There is the tendency of appointment based on nepotism or relative bias.
There is a better method of police chiefs rather than being appointed by the mayor or city council.
- This method should be based on a combined meritocracy and election which implies that initial selections should be from the top-ranking officers, then final selection will be based on elections among the people.
Hence, in this case, it is concluded that the appointment of police chiefs has its pros and cons. While there is another better method other than appointment to select a police chief.
