The thing I think this question is hinting towards is photosynthesis. The CO2 dissolved in lakes is used directly by both the algae and phytoplankton as well as plants at the lake bed for photosynthesis.

The dissolved carbon dioxide in a lake is used directly by producers or autotrophs.

PRODUCERS:

  • Producers are a group of organisms that are capable of synthesizing their own food using energy from sunlight (photosynthesis) or chemicals (chemosynthesis).

  • Producers that photosynthesize i.e. make use of light as an energy source, absorb carbon dioxide as a carbon source to synthesize food in organic form.

  • Therefore, the dissolved carbon dioxide in a lake (water body) is used directly by producers or autotrophs for photosynthesis.
