Why did African-Americans, both slave and free, develop their own segregated religious institutions and gatherings over the course of the early 1800s? What needs might such churches and gatherings have met that white churches did not?
Segregation was mandated by law so they had to separate themselves from white people, however many willingly did because they wanted to feel safe with people in their own community.
