Imagine for a second that human cells were more like plant cells, in that they had cell walls and central vacuoles. What would have happened to John? Would he have still died?
Assuming John died when his cells lyse due to a hypotonic solution, if animal cells had cell walls and vacuoles, his cells would be able to store excess water and become turgid and he would not die.
