Dr. Faustus starts studying witchcraft in hopes of getting knowledge and power that will make him super strong. “Then read not more,” he said (10). He had finally studied all he could on medical, law, and physics, but this did not satisfy his need for knowledge. He desired “of power, honor, of omnipotence” (54). His reasoning for wanting magical abilities was that he was not an average person and had the intellect to practice witchcraft to aid enhance his understanding of medicine and physics. His major goal was to obtain magical power beyond mortal men.
A benevolent angel came to Faustus after he accepted witchcraft. "Lay that dam-ned book aside, and gaze not on it, lest it tempt the soul" (70). The good angel came to the teacher of wisdom to encourage him not to read any more words of the poison, which would ultimately cost him his soul, the wicked angel answered. The consequences of not listening to wise counsel may be disastrous in life.
After begging, the wicked angel appeared to tempt Faustus to continue reading. "Go forward Faustus art, wherein all nature’s treasury is contained" (75). This was an effort to get him to read the witchcraft that would take his soul. Listening to our inner voice might save us from a lot of difficulties in life. That inner voice telling you not to go ahead with a plan, or that gut feeling you get when something isn't right." know that your words have won me at the last to practice magic and concealed arts" (100). Magic led him to seek more.
Furthermore, it's significant in order to perhaps control the earth element, his pursuit of magic led him to seek greater knowledge of it. A number of times throughout the book's history, he had second thoughts about whether or not to continue reading or to turn away from the magical poison. As in life, we often know that the road we've taken will cost us something we don't want to pay.
