You can compare the role of women in society as it is today and as it is in "The Odyssey". Women in the story are either expected to remain faithful to an unfaithful husband, such as is the case with Penelope, or to be deceiving seductresses, like Circe.
Society nowadays does not expect women to stay home, to remain silent, or to be sensual objects anymore. The causes for that rely in the evolution of our understanding. Woman are now seen as equal to men, whereas in "The Odyssey," they were seen as inferior.
