A restaurant owner washed 87 kilograms of vegetables, some spinach and some carrots. The spinach came in 5-kilogram bags and the carrots came in 7-kilogram bags. The owner washed 15 bags of vegetables in all. How many bags of each kind did he wash?

weight of spinach = 5 * x, weight of carrots = 7 * x

5x + 7y = 87           (2)

Sub it into (2):

5x + 7(15 - x) = 87

5x + 105 - 7x = 87

2x = 105 - 87 = 18

x = 9

y = 15 - x = 15 - 9 = 6

So 9 bags pf spinach, 6 bags of carrots.
